Report: The nature of university mergers and acquisitions

Institutional mergers come in various shapes and sizes, but successful examples are never ‘quick fix’ options. In this report we examine examples of international HEI mergers. We discuss the drivers and success factors in a merger process. 

The UK Government’s 4 May 2020 announcement of its financial bailout for the English university sector as a result of the coronavirus crisis came with a warning of a ‘restructuring regime...with attached conditions’. In other words, many are predicting that those institutions at risk of financial failure will be pressed to merge to avoid closure.

Here, we explore the nature of higher education mergers, drawing lessons from those of the recent past that may be useful in guiding an approach for the near future.
