What we did
The University of Bristol has undergone tremendous growth within a space constrained site. The University offers guaranteed accommodation to all first-year students. Due to the growth, it has been difficult to meet these needs, and ensure an equitable experience. The University needed to identify what assets should be targeted for re-development, and what design aspects should be prioritised in the development.

What we found
We engaged with almost 2000 students across owned and leased student accommodation. We created a scorecard, benchmarking a number of design parameters such as bedroom quality and size, eating experience (comparing catered and non-catered options), bathrooms, amenity, location and value. We were able to identify some quick wins which were implemented immediately (such as bed replacements) and some longer-term issues such as kitchen improvements which have since been changed.

What next
The Rate Your Residence survey is being repeated every 2 years to monitor student feedback to properties and create a cycle of continuous improvement projects that the estates team can undertake.
