Privacy Agreement – Research with Former University Students

This privacy agreement outlines how your personal data will be collected, shared, and used as part of a research project being undertaken by Campus Intuition Pty Ltd (“Campus Intuition”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) in partnership with Swinburne University (“the University”).

1. Purpose of the research

The research aims to:

  • Help the University understand why some students discontinue their studies;
  • Identify who may be most at risk of discontinuing;
  • Inform the design of improved support services and interventions to help students persist in their studies.

2. Who is involved

This research is a joint initiative between Campus Intuition and the University. Both parties will act as data controllers for the information processed during this project. Data will be shared securely and used solely for the purposes of this research.

Campus Intuition is an independent higher education consultancy engaged to conduct the research and provide anonymised findings and recommendations. The University is administering the project and will use the insights generated to design targeted interventions and support strategies for current and future students.

3.  What information we collect

By opting in to participate in the research:

The University will match your name to demographic details they hold, including:

The course you were enrolled in

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Whether you were an undergraduate or postgraduate student
  • The length of your enrolment
  •  Your postcode

During the research we will collect information from you that includes:

  • Email address to arrange interviews
  • Communication about your experience enrolling and finishing at Swinburne via interview questions and/or survey questions

4. How your personal details and data collected will be used

The demographic details will be used to:

  • Select a representative sample of students to invite into the research
  • Help detect demographic patterns in student attrition (e.g. if certain demographics are more affected)

Your name will not be used in association with any answers, your answers will be anonymous in the analysis. You will be identified by key demographic indicators, such as ‘a female student enrolled in Business said that…’ or ‘mature-age students were more likely to drop-out in term 1 due to X’.

Anonymised findings will be used presentations within the University and potentially externally at other conferences, events, in industry reports or articles.

5. Participation

If you opt in, you may be invited to:

  • Participate in a recorded interview conducted via Microsoft Teams
  • Complete a survey

Participation is voluntary. You can choose to withdraw at any time by contacting Dr Samantha Hall (sam@campusintuition.com).

6. Anonymity and Data Protection

  • Your name will not be included in any reporting, analysis, or findings.
  •  All findings will be anonymised and used for research and institutional learning purposes only.
  • Transcripts of interviews will be used for analysis and securely stored.
  • Voice recordings will only be used for transcription purposes and will be deleted after transcription.

We take the security of your personal data seriously and apply appropriate safeguards. Your data will be retained only for as long as necessary to complete the research and meet legal obligations.
